This photographic concept book proposes a reading of Florence as a living laboratory of the production, stratification and transformation of knowledge, the sciences and art. It offers a visual and textual itinerary through the city in twenty-three chapters, from A to W, and features a number of Florentine museums, archives and collections: from the Florence State Archives to the Central Herbarium, from the Opificio delle Pietre Dure to the Galileo Museum, from La Specola to the Historical Archives of the European Union.

It looks at the legacies of Anna Maria Luisa de Medici and of the Luba people, at Machiavelli, Dante and the David of Michelangelo, at a dried plant from South Yemen, the nineteenth century’s urban development, the destructions of WW2, the flood, and a fish.

In an almost filmic sequence, careful and precise photographs by artist Armin Linke enter into dialogue with historical documentary photographs as well as with texts by Hannah Baader and Costanza Caraffa. This itinerary is linked to a broader discourse on archiving and the activation of knowledge, as well as art and the making of cultural heritage. It is also concerned with photography and imaging technologies, from cameras to microscopes and telescopes, as well as processes of medialization.

An introductory essay and an overview of Florence’s geological formation are completing the publication.

This exhibition documents the research and residency project Manufatto in Situ founded by Viaindustriae (2007-2017). Initially based on a specific research-action in the marginal and radical landscape of the rural-mountain area of Cancelli and the Menotre Valley, Manufatto has since used hypertextual methods and extra-situ projects to draw connections between different sites, types of intervention and 'thematic' landscapes. The result is an extensive survey, exhibition and art-architecture-nature book on public space, site-specific art practices, interventions and landscape studies in Italy and borders. This archive project consists of 10 thematic sections composed of artistic traces, works and documents relating to 10 Umbrian landscapes, linked in turn to 10 extra-regional 'parallel' sites, environments and radical historical experiences from the 1960s to the present. This introduces an unorthodox and critical overview of the contemporary landscape, between environmental art and architecture, nature and the city. The exhibition is conceived as an integrable system of horizontal documentation (documentary/table), vertical inventory (wall), and 'projections', provisional artefacts, complex forms located in the landscape (utopia/pyramids).

Viaindustriae is a cultural association and publishing house based in Foligno, PG, Italy. Founded in 2005, it promotes projects and artistic research ranging from museum exhibitions, site-specific installations, public actions, artist residencies and publications in various formats. In the last ten years, the publishing activity has consolidated to become the association's main field of action. Viaindustriae publishes artists' books, experimental research books, territorial studies, exhibition catalogues, monographic catalogues - among other forms of publishing - using publishing practice as a generative tool for artistic experimentation. The books have different formats that do not follow the standards of a canonical publishing practice but rather the needs and specificities of each project. Viaindustriae sees the publishing practice as an act of translation that requires a transformation of the art or visual work into a new form, where the work itself develops new possibilities and meanings; this is why each book becomes an autonomous platform and not just an opportunity to transfer content.
